The St. James Food Pantry has been in operation since 2005. We started small- providing weekend food for 10 kids during the school year to now, serving over 100 families throughout the entire year. Our clients are referred to us by Social Workers, Counsellors, or Teachers from North Kansas City and Park Hill School Districts, or HeadStart. Basically, If a family qualifies for the Free/Reduced Lunch program, they qualify for assistance at our pantry. Registration is updated annually. All that family needs to do is contact their child's school to get registered. Registered families may come in every other week to pick up dry/canned goods, protein, fresh produce, dairy and bakery items. This also pre-screens them for participation in the Back to School Fair to receive school supplies and for the St. James Pantry Christmas Store.
The St. James Food Pantry receives food from individual donations, Food Drives at local schools and businesses, purchased food at Harvesters, and, as part of the Grocery Store Recovery Program we also receive goods weekly from Walmart, Target, and Aldi.
The St. James Food Pantry distributes food Sundays from 10-11:30am and Wednesdays from 3:30-5:30pm.
It takes a great number of volunteers to keep the food moving in and out of our doors, and we have many opportunities - long and short term - to help. We have need of helpers with weekly pickups at local stores nearly every weekday morning, volunteers for distribution hours, behind the scenes help with sorting, organizing, boxing, breaking down boxes, data entry, and ordering food. We also have short term service opportunities annually at the Back to School Fair in August and the Christmas Store in December with set-up and personal shopper assistance here in the Great Hall.
